In fact, if you want to be a little diligent in reading and consistent with your practice, you can also create a simple blog that is attractive and has the potential to bring in lots of visitors. Want to know how?
How to Start a Blog on WordPress
There are many tutorial articles on how to start a blog on wordpress for beginners that you can find, and there are various strategies that are applied in them. Some focus on quality articles only. But not a few also focus on quantity.
In this (quite) long article, I will only teach you how to start a blog in WordPress based on what I have been doing and making so far.
I give priority to the quality of writing that is made It doesn’t matter how many articles there are, what I pay attention to is the quality of the articles.
Below are 6 simple steps you can follow in the process of starting blog on wordpress along with their optimization tips. You can practice it gradually and consistently to get maximum results.
1. Determine the Blog Topic
Before talking further in the process of how to start your new blog, the first step that you must take is to determine the blog topic that will be discussed later.
The advantage of determining the blog topic at the beginning, it is easier for you to think about what articles to write. I suggest you choose a topic that you are good at.
Even better if the niche is in accordance with your passion/hobby. Because you will be more comfortable and feel free when building a blog later. Remember, creating a blog is relatively easy, but it takes consistency.
There are several ways that you can do in determining a blog niche:
- View product categories on the Marketplace.
- Blogwalking of major websites.
- Brainstorm ideas from yourself.
My advice, choose a specific niche because it will make it easier for you to determine the things that will be discussed. This type of blog is usually called a micro-niche blog.
Also, from a narrow topic, it can be more easily expanded if you wish. With a note, the initial topic that has been worked on has reached the desired target, for example, many articles have entered the first page.
2. Choosing a Blog Platform
After determining the main topic that will be discussed, now is the time to choose the “engine” of your blog. There are many blogging platforms in the world, but the most popular is WordPress (More than 30% of websites in the world use WordPress).
So I automatically recommend you to choose WordPress as your blogging platform. What I mean is WordPress.org, not WordPress.com.
Creating a blog at WordPress.com and WordPress.org are both free. There are some differences that make you have to pay a small fee when using WordPress.org.
3. Buying a Domain and Hosting
The third step you have to do is already own a domain and hosting. I wrote it in the article on how to buy a domain and hosting.
If you don’t have both, I suggest reading the article and putting it into practice, then continue reading this article. If you’ve already set up your domain and hosting, read on.
4. Install WordPress on cPanel
The next way to start a blog on wordpress, of course you must install WordPress first. Please open your cPanel. Access URL, username, and password in the email you receive when buying hosting.
The cPanel login page looks like the image below. CPanel’s job is to manage your blog’s related systems. As a laptop, cPanel is the same as the Control Panel menu.
After logging in to cPanel you will go to the dashboard page. At the very top there is a search column, please type “Softaculous” until the application appears. Then you just click on the application icon.
You will be taken to the Softaculous page as shown below. Click on the WordPress option, yes, because you will be installing the WordPress CMS for your blog.
After clicking the WordPress icon, look for the words “Install Now” and click to install.
You enter a new page that contains several fields that must be filled. In the image below, select the https protocol, then select the domain according to the one you purchased earlier.
In the In Directory section there is usually the words “wp“, so please delete it to make it empty. If not removed, all of your article URLs will become: yourdomain.com/wp/how-to-create-a-blog.
Continue to the field below, fill in the site name and description of the blog. Don’t be too dizzy to fill it, because it can be replaced if it doesn’t fit.
Enter your username & password to log into the blog dashboard later. Also enter the main email which is useful for receiving all notifications about your blog.
I suggest you to checklist “limit login attempts (loginzer)” to secure your login into your blog.
Urgent !! Never fill in your username with the word “admin” because it is vulnerable to being hacked by thieves, aka hackers. Fill in other words consisting of a combination of letters and numbers.
You can also choose themes for your blog that match your niche. Continue to the next step, leave the other fields as-is. If so, click the Install button. The WordPress install process only runs for a few seconds.
Your WordPress blog installation process is complete. In the next step, please log in to yourdomain.com/wp-admin to enter the WordPress dashboard. Log in using the username & password that you created during the installation process.
5. Basic WordPress Settings
After following the easy blogging method above, I will provide tips on the basic settings that you must do the first time. There are some crucial things that you must do immediately.
5.1. Posts, Pages & Plugins
Starting from the post menu. You have to delete the default WordPress post which only contains “Hello World”. The trick is to enter the Post >> All Posts menu on the left. Then delete the post “Hello World”.
Apart from posts, WordPress also has a sample page that you should delete. Please enter the Pages >> All Pages menu on the left. Then delete the “Sample Page”.
Then move on to the Plugins section. There are two built-in WordPress plugins namely Akismet (to ward off spam comments) and also Hello Dolly. Please delete the two plugins.
“Akismet’s function is good, why was it deleted?”
If you use the free version of Akismet, it’s better to just delete it. Less effective. In the next section, I will show you how to prevent spam without a plugin.
5.2. User Profile Data
Then go to the User Account >> Your Profile section. Please complete all fields in it with your personal data as the main owner and author of the blog.
5.3. Settings – General
Enter the Settings >> General section, fill in the data completely. Change the timezone according to your area, then select the date & time format you like.
5.4. Setting – Reading
Move to Settings >> Reading, Change the data according to the image below. Later on the main page of your personal blog, only the 5 most recent posts will be displayed. The rest are on the second page, and so on.
5.5. Settings – Discussion
Then go to the Settings >> Discussion menu. Here it takes some settings related to comments that enter your blog. Change the settings as shown below so that not too many notifications come in.
When your business blog is still empty of visitors, you may not feel it. But when the traffic is high, I’m sure you’ll start getting dizzy with the notifications that keep ringing.
Still in the Discussion section, please adjust the appearance of your account photo in the Default Avatar section.
Just choose the Gravatar logo if you have never setup a Gravatar account. With this option, at least it will not appear completely blank when your account replies in the comments column.
5.6. Settings – Media
Now go to the Settings >> Media menu to adjust the size of the images that appear in your posts. Change the large size to the width of the page of your post.
For 2 blog layout themes (post & sidebar), usually the post column width is in the range of 650-700 px.
Why is only the large size changed? Because the size of the image that appears on the posting page is a large size. The bigger the difference between the image size and the width of the blog layout, the slower the speed of your blog.
For example, the width of your blog layout is 650 px but you are displaying a large image size with a width of 1,024 px, it will affect the speed of opening your blog.
For example, in the pictures in this article, all widths are 650 px to adjust the width of the infomediaku.net blog layout. Just try to download the image and look in the Properties section.
5.7. Settings – Permalink
Enter the last setting, but it’s no less important. Namely setting the permalink or URL of a post. The best for SEO and human readability is the Post Name format.
See the image below, imagine if the URL format of your article is Plain or Numeric? Of course, it is difficult to type, doesn’t like Google, and increases the risk of mistakes when typing.
Those are some basic settings that I think need to be done after installing WordPress. You just do it once, the rest is just to focus on writing articles.
6. Optimizing Blog
On the way to creating a blog, apart from writing articles you also have to do some blog optimization. The goal is that your blog is liked by readers, is good in SEO and can penetrate the first page of Google, and ultimately be able to make money.
Some optimizations I mean:
6.1. Choose Themes & Plugins
There are thousands of free themes and plugins available in the WordPress database, and quite a few cool & paid theme providers like Themeforest for example.
You must be able to determine the best theme and also the best plugins that must be installed on your blog. Don’t let the use of themes/plugins actually worsen your blog’s performance.
6.2. Integration with Web Analytics
Talking about how to start a blog on WordPress, it will never be separated from the process of analyzing the activity of visitors who enter your blog. So it is important to integrate blogs with Web Analytics.
The Visitor data tracker that I recommend is installing Google Analytics and also pasting the Facebook pixel code on your blog. The two of them were more than enough to collect data.
In addition, you can also use the data from the two analytics data above for more complex purposes, for example doing retargeting ads.
6.3. Register with Google Webmaster
Submitting a blog to Google Webmaster is the right decision in the early days of your blog release. The reason is Google Webmaster is like a doctor for a blog.
In the Webmaster dashboard, you can read a lot of data related to the health of the blog, such as which pages are not mobile-friendly, or which pages are getting the most clicks, or whether there are any error pages, and much more.
6.4. Making Quality Articles
The Google algorithm is increasingly reading the quality of an article. If summed up in simple sentences, then the articles that are liked by humans 100% Google will also like them. Point.
So in today’s modern SEO era, if you want your blog to live long and compete on the first page of Google, then focus on creating quality articles for readers.
The longer a visitor is on your blog, reading an article until it runs out, the better the reputation of the article (and your blog) will be in the eyes of Google.
Especially if the visitor clicks on the title of another related article, and continues reading. Wow, this is really cool. The Dwell Time numbers will be very high, and that’s a good signal for Google.
6.5. On-Page Optimization and Off-Page SEO
Quality articles are important. Some of my articles have entered the first page for low-medium keyword competition without any SEO optimization. So I accidentally entered the first page.
After I checked, it turned out that it was because of the high CTR number (many clicks on search engines) and the Dwell Time number was also high. People linger on the article. So you can say that the article was liked by readers.
Well, it would be even better if your articles were also optimized on SEO On Page. After the On-Page business is neat and tidy, you can continue to do SEO Off-Page optimization so that the results are maximized.
6.6. Blog Speed Optimization
Last but not least, it is one of the very important steps to create a blog, which is to increase the loading speed of your blog, especially for smartphone users.
The mobile speed update in July 2018 from the Webmaster blog stated that the speed of a website, when accessed from a smartphone, is now one of the parameters for determining ranking on search engines.
So you should pay serious, very serious attention to the performance of your blog, especially when accessed from tablets and mobile phones.
6.7. Finding Money Through Blogs
And in the end, if your articles have made their way to the first page of Google, have some traffic and the numbers are quite stable, then it’s time to get money from your blog.
In addition to helping readers get the information they need, for the popularity of the blog and also for personal branding yourself, of course, the goal of blogging is definitely to get money right?
“Congratulations” By following the 6 ways to start a personal blog on WordPress and some settings and optimization tips, now your blog can be accessed by anyone, and ready to compete on the first page of Google. Good luck!!
